Because we all know yarn and sunshine can be friends
Hello, fellow yarn lovers! Just because it’s hot outside doesn’t mean your needles need to take a vacation. After all, going without knitting for more than 7 days consecutively could be hazardous to our health, right??
I know, I know—wool and 90+ -degree weather don’t exactly scream “match made in heaven,” especially when you live in the South where humidity levels equal the temperature. (Icky sticky…) But trust me, with the right project and the right place, summer knitting can be just as cozy and satisfying as curling up by the fire in winter (minus the marshmallows and hot chocolate… unless you’re ambitious or completely addicted to hot chocolate!).
A recent trip to a ballpark in Conway, Arkansas, reminded me that there are many great places to knit outdoors!.

Here are a few of my favorite places to get my stitch on when the sun is shining and the iced coffee is flowing. (Or in my case, the iced Diet Dr. Pepper!)
Under a Tree at the Park
There’s nothing quite like finding the perfect shady spot, laying out a blanket—preferably a cotton blanket!–and diving into your latest WIP (work-in-progress, for the newbies). Bonus points if you pack snacks and your project bag matches your picnic basket. EXTRA bonus points if you bring along your handy-dandy Quick Gauge checker!
I always bring something light—cotton dishcloths, lacy scarves, or those cute summer tops I promise I’ll finish before September. Socks are also a great option for small projects for summer, since they’re not bulky but still carry the promise of fall and winter as you knit. Plus, you get bonus vibes when curious passersby say, “Oh wow, you’re knitting?!” like you just pulled a rabbit out of a hat. Yes, Karen. I am knitting. And I brought an extra ball of yarn, just in case. (Bonus points if you bring a spare set of knitting needles to share, too!)
Your Favorite Coffee/Soda Shop Patio
Cold brew, a shady umbrella, and people-watching while you knit? Yes, please. I love setting up shop at my go-to soft-drink-of-choice place with a tall glass of something icy and caffeinated. Summer knitting here feels social—even if I’m flying solo.
Hot tip: Stick to small projects that won’t try to take over the whole table. Think socks, fingerless gloves, or gauge swatches you’ve been pretending to get around to. And don’t forget your project bag—nobody wants their skeins rolling onto the cement or into someone’s cold foam. Find some BEAUTIFUL small project bags here!
By the Water (But Not In It)
Poolside. Lakeside. Oceanside. Even riverside if you’re feeling poetic. Water and knitting are a dreamy pair as long as you keep your yarn dry and your sunscreen handy—not necessarily in that order!
There’s something magical about stitching while listening to waves lapping or kids splashing in the background. I keep a beach towel under everything and bring a big floppy hat for maximum shade and mysterious beach-knitter aesthetic. People might assume you’re crafting mermaid clothes. Let them. They don’t have to know you’re doing a gauge swatch!
If it gets too warm, just dangle your feet in the water and remember: summer knitting isn’t about speed—it’s about vibe.
Final Stitch Thoughts
Summer knitting is more about the where than the what. Pick breezy projects, bring your favorite lightweight yarns, and give yourself permission to take it slow. No one’s expecting you to crank out a cable-knit sweater in July (unless you’re planning for Christmas, and in that case—teach me your ways).
Whether you’re lounging in the park, sipping iced colas, or turning your beach day into a stitch-cation, just remember: good knitting happens wherever you feel relaxed, inspired, and a little bit sun-kissed.
Stay cool, knit on, and Happy Knitting!
Anita (but the summer version)
